About Us

Resources for Independence Central Valley, (RICV), was established in November of 1976 with the goal of providing services that would increase resources and opportunities for persons with disabilities to live independently. Since its inception, the organization has worked to assist and support people who have disabilities. RICV originally served individuals living in Fresno County. However, the organization has expanded to provide services in Tulare, Madera, Merced and Kings Counties as well.

What makes RICV different is the philosophy on which it was founded; that of the Independent Living Movement “Nothing about us without us.” We believe this  still rings true today, not only for people with disabilities, but for all disadvantaged communities. It is the reason behind our vested efforts to insure community representation and why we refer to our “clients” as “consumers;” actively participating consumers of resources, rather than passive recipients of delegated services. It is the reason that since 1976 and to this day, over 51 percent of the organization’s staff, management, and Board of Directors are people who have disabilities.

Our mission is to empower independence! We encourage people with disabilities to be in control of their lives and to live more independently through a diverse range of choices and opportunities.

Resources for Independence Central Valley provides the Core Services of information and referral, independent living skills training, assistive technology training, peer support, individual and systems advocacy, youth transition from high school to adult life, and assisting individuals with transition from nursing homes to independent living in the community.

People with disabilities come in all shapes, sizes, and ages.
